MUNDO AFRIKA is the award-winning world music choir based at Formby High School, in Merseyside. Over the past 14 years, we have trained six generations of young performers from across the school as part of our extra-curricular music programme.
Specialising in acappella African vocals, our performances are enhanced with dynamic percussion and traditional dance. Many arrangements are created by the group’s Musical Director, Mr Steve Cook, and by the students themselves. Our repertoire includes a range of traditional and contemporary African songs in a variety of languages.
Over the years, this outstanding group has developed a reputation for thrilling, breathtaking and energetic performances at school concerts and further afield. The group has achieved great success at the National Festival of Music for Youth on many occasions, performed at the Royal Albert Hall at the School’s Proms and also performed for HRH Queen Elizabeth II in Liverpool. In 2012, these talented students entertained thousands of spectators at London’s Olympic Park as part of the Sainsbury’s School Games.
Following a mesmerising performance at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall in July 2014, the most recent (and youngest) line-up received the Traditional and International Music Award.
‘Mundo Afrika’ has developed some wonderful relationships with specialist practitioners. These include the fantastic Tyndale Thomas and Urban Voice, Backbeat Percussion Quartet, Black Umfolosi and Lucky Moyo, and the inspirational Pearl of Africa Children’s Choir. As part their work within the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust ‘Lead Practitioner’ programme, they worked with local schools to record the ‘Jambo Afrika’ CD and also worked on the Sefton Schools ‘Wealth of Nations’ CD recording.
Most recently, we have worked closely to support the national Sing Up campaign. Our amazing students have become ‘Young Singing Leaders’ and regularly work with children at local primary schools to deliver workshops. They have also led critically acclaimed sessions for teachers, other practitioners and school leaders at national conferences and events.
In September 2014, the group recorded it’s latest CD ‘Ubuntu’ which will be released in November!
Welcome to the wonderful world of Mundo Afrika!
